BS Vintage: Sleepy’s Theme – The Vinyl Room

It’s 1997 and you’re one third of the production team collectively known as Organized Noize. You’re working on a couple of the greatest southern hip hop Country Rap Tunes albums ever made. All created within the span of two years were Witchdoctor’s A S.W.A.T. Healin Ritual, Goodie Mob’s Still Standing, Outkast’s Aquemini and Lil Will’s Better Days.
With that being said, the logical person is left with the question “What did he do with all of that free time he had on his hands?” The answer is simple, he formed a group and created a dope album that paid homage to his influences.
The Vinyl Room plays like the soundtrack to a modern blaxploitation movie. Songs play on for 8 minutes or more sometimes while others clock in under a minute and contain no lyrics. This album was obviously not created with commercial sales in mind.
If for nothing else, The Vinyl Room makes for great atmosphere music. Whether it be played during a late night romp with a classy dame or a smoke session with your boys, this album’s only intention is to set the mood. And that it does.
Props to GDB & 29 @ IAP-TV.com for putting me up on this album when I was in high school.

i must admit, all these years later, it is good to see this album gettin love on the internet. i was fresh out of college, a huge outkast-organized noise fan, and tokin like a champion when this album dropped. and damn was it somethin amazin out of the middle of nowhere. unfortunately there was never a follow-up, and even worse, sleepy never pushed to this depth of soul again.
but hey, that’s why albums last a lifetime. this was an instant classic and therefore is still nothing short of great to this day. “private party” is still the panty dropper. and what wkend cloudfest is complete without the “choked out saturday night.”
retro pimp-funk at its best. my only question still is… why do they consider this a solo debut??
